Street Prints Mauao first came onto the scene back in December 2015 as Tauranga’s first Street Art Festival. Ali is originally from Malaysia and has been a barber for five years. He's worked in the Mount for three years prior to opening his own shop.

Be prepared for a cool but not cold ice skating experience. The Ice Skate Tour travels around New Zealand with state of the art, artificial ice rinks. They look like ice and have 97 percent same gliding capacity as natural ice. Surrounded by an inflatable boarding, helmets and gloves provided at no charge (both compulsory for kids) it’s the safest possible way to try ice skating.

Starting a business while raising two young daughters has been a wild ride! But seeing the business grow and showing my girls that hard work pays off has been incredibly rewarding.

Lauren and her partner Matt have owned the Mount Surf Shops and the Ripcurl Licence store now for over 18 months.

Having previously worked for the previous owners in management type roles they didn’t hesitate when the opportunity arose to purchase the business. It totally made sense having had the background knowledge of the business previously.

Lauren is from a Management and Retail background and Matt, after travelling, went into the Banking and Finance sector before jumping at the opportunity of purchasing the Mount Surf Shops.

They are thoroughly enjoying the challenge of running three retail stores a website and a warehouse and love the support of the mount community and also the constant stream of out of towners and travellers who enjoy our beautiful town.

The Mount Surf Shops have been around since 2003 and the Totara street branch of the Mount Surf Shop used to be the iconic surf museum back in the day.

Recently Matt and Lauren moved the Mount Surf Shop downtown store in to its brand new, much larger location right next door to the original iconic location on the Mount Mainstreet and it’s awesome to see all of our local’s positive responses to the change.

Matt and Kimberley Hayward have lived in the Mount for 5 years after moving to Tauranga 11 years ago from Queenstown. They have two daughters who attend Mount Primary and absolutely love the Mount community. They find the Mount community really supportive local business.

They fell in love with this site 5 years ago when it was Mundo Mexicano. After a failed attempt to buy the business, they bought what was the Stock Exchange Bar and opened Mount Brewing Co Bar on Maunganui Road.

When the opportunity came up again, they jumped at it and called their friends at Moa Brewery and so Hide Eatery and Bar was born!

Tracy and Chelsey at Vekart specialize in commercial interior fit outs and residential joinery design and manufacture.

The commercial side of the business, run by Kevin Murphy, is involved in multi-unit residential projects, Hotel/motel refurbishments, laboratory fit outs, fit outs of Government buildings, fast food chains to name a few.

Business growth and taking on a new designer (Chelsey Mathieson), created the need to move their Mount home office, where it had been for 5 years, to the Mount Main Street.

They were very fortunate to be offered an upstairs office space, at the Mount end of the main street, to base their Design Studio. They are currently in the process of installing a show kitchen to be able to assist clients through the design process.

The Somme: From Tauranga to the Trenches

Take in the stories of Tauranga men who fought and died in the terrible battle of the Somme, 100 years ago.

The Somme: From Tauranga to the Trenches is the latest WW1 exhibition from the Tauranga Heritage Collection. It features maps, quotes, photographs and facts relating to New Zealand’s efforts at the Somme. It also reveals the connection Tauranga has to “that terrible battle” through the stories and images of many of the Tauranga men who fought and in some cases died there.

The exhibition will open at the Phoenix car park downtown Mount Maunganui on 15 September 2016 - One hundred years to the day New Zealand entered the fray on the Western Front. It will also travel to the Papamoa and Greerton Libraries.

“The Gallipoli experience of 1915 has overshadowed New Zealand’s enormous contribution on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918. It was on the Somme that the majority of New Zealanders were killed or wounded during the First World War. And it was here that New Zealand experienced its worst days in military history in terms of loss of life.

The Battle of the Somme was New Zealand’s first major engagement on the Western Front. It took a huge toll on the 15,000 members of the New Zealand Division who were involved. Roughly one in seven of the division who fought on the Somme was killed, and about four in every 10 were wounded.” - New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Flights of Fancy" by Santie Cronje

Symbolist Artist Santie Cronje paints full time from her studio in Cambridge. Originally from South Africa, she studied Art at school and completed a Bachelors of Arts at the University of Pretoria in 1994.

Santie's preferred medium is Acrylics with its quick drying times and low toxicity. She uses thin layers and washes to create different moods and light effects. Her work is described as "a delicate simplicity and elegance, which touches the childlike side of the heart" A love of the Ocean, travelling, Nature; the Colour Turquoise and the Moon are elements that inspire the Artist's creations.

Santie is represented by a few selected galleries and her work is held in private collections in New Zealand and abroad.

It was here in Mount Mainstreet where Amanda started her journey in the photographic industry 22 years ago at Mount Fast Photos. After working in photo labs in NZ and Australia for 8 years Amanda moved to London where she immediately began her career as a photographer. In 2006 Amanda returned home and started her business.

Having worked for Bob on her return from the UK while her business was just starting out, Amanda knows that the relationship in a shared studio space will work well, and is a bit sentimental about coming back to the street where it all started. Amanda is a commercial photographer specializing in architecture, interiors and advertising/promotional photography. Amanda’s business has been running in Mount Maunganui for almost 10 years, providing architects, builders, designers, advertising agencies (and lots more) with high quality imagery to help their businesses look stunning in this visual online world.

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is looking for an enthusiastic, well-organised volunteer to help coordinate the Daffodil Day appeal in Mount Maunganui.

Working alongside our other Mount Maunganui coordinator, you will be responsible for organising Daffodil Day collection sites in Mount Maunganui, rostering volunteers for the street appeal and managing volunteers and sites on Daffodil Day, Friday 26 August.

Council have been looking at ways to better manage existing parking and, where possible, provide new spaces in the Mount North area. They are proposing some changes to the Nikau Crescent road layout and parking provision. This includes a reconfiguration of existing parking and the introduction of a one-way system which will run in a northerly direction. They are also looking at improving pedestrian and cyclist safety by providing a 3 metre shared pedestrian/cycle facility adjacent to the Port of Tauranga fence from Rata Street to Coronation Park. They are anticipating construction will be prior to Christmas 2016.

A concept plan is attached which shows the proposed changes.

Council are sending letters to all adjacent property owners and businesses to advise of the plans and seek feedback.

Ling Li has been in the fashion industry for 10 years as a retail fashion shop owner and purchased Classique Boutique on Mount Mainstreet a year ago. Ling is enjoying it very much.

Classique has been in the Mount for over 10 years, previously owned by Jean Swanepool who ran the business very successfully. Jean continues to work in the business part-time and helps Ling a lot.
